2012: Combat The Nonsense

http://www.universetoday.com/2009/10/14/2012-combat-the-nonsense/

In a rather cruel media ploy, the creators of the upcoming science fiction movie "2012" are purposely feeding the flames of internet panic about the ridiculous claims that the world will end in 2012. This viral marketing campaign has created fake science websites and encourages people to search for “2012” on the Web. While there are many websites, like Universe Today, which provide solid and methodical evidence that the 2012 hysteria is complete nonsense, hordes of other sites out there are full of gobbledygook and a gross misstating of what they claim to be scientific evidence that some astronomical event will decimate our . Why are these hoaxers doing this? For the oldest reason ever: for profit and notoriety. If you visit their websites, most are trying to sell books or videos.

For those reading this article because you have concerns about 2012, we encourage you to read our complete series of articles on 2012, and it won't cost you a thing. The articles were written by Dr. Ian O'Neil, who has a PhD in solar physics. Additionally, below is a list of other resources that should help answer any questions or concerns you may have on this topic:

1. NASA scientist Dr. David Morrison Dr. Morrison, a world-renowned expert on the solar system (and asteroid impacts) has published a free pdf, "Doomsday 2012, Planet Nibiru and Cosmophobia," a concise summary of the claims and answers containing solid scientific responses. It is published by the Astronomical Society of the Pacific as a public service.

2. Morrison also serves as the public scientist for NASA’s “Ask an Astrobiologist” service, where he answers questions for the public. You'll find many questions and answers about 2012 there, as well as other space topics.

3. The 365 Days of Astronomy podcast has a couple of great, short podcasts that address the 2012 claims, where you can get lots of information in about 10 minutes of your time. Will the World End in 2012? provides an overview of all 2012 doomsday hoaxes, and "Ancient Astronomy: The Mayans" discusses the significance of the Mayan calendar and, briefly, how the world is not going to end in 2012.

4. The Griffith Observatory has a great, concise page on the different claims called "The Truth About 2012: The End is NOT Near," written by astronomer Dr. Ed Krupp.

5. "2012 Hoax" is a website written by several professional and amateur astronomers that thoroughly discusses the various doomsday scenarios and crackpot websites. You can also follow 2012 Hoax on Twitter.

6. Gia's Blog, written by science groupie Gia Milinovitch (also married to physicist Dr. Brian Cox) has a great page titled "Apocalympics 2012: Mayan 'Prophecy'"

7. If English isn't your native language, astronomer Florian Freistetter has written several 2012 articles in German. They can be found on his website, Astrodicticum Simplex. Of special interest, Florian has recently put together a "2012 FAQ" page in German.

8. Daniel Fischer has a webpage in both English and German, Ist Es Wahr? Nachrichten vom Rande der Wirklichkeit (Is it true? News from the Edge of Reality), which tracks articles related to all sorts of doomsday and conspiracy theories.

  2. very good post .
the panic must be counter balanced, still one rather hopes for some kind of event .that may break the powers that control us now

  3. Somebody please tell me that the people who "believe" in this madness are just going on a joyride of sorts. Its so bloody stupid that I can't imagine anyone with the intellectual capacity of brocolli actually thinking any of this is real.

  5. People in mass have the need to believe in the magical and mythical. Look at religion and government. A lot of people with realistic ills that don't go away seek naturally or man made I.E. The media a way in by finding an easy out. We become so emotional that instead of thinking we imagine.

  6. for some weird reason it has been like that since the begining go back in archeology and it comes up again and again-we ate to many brains in the past

  7. Well, that video I posted last night explains how we developed a 'religious sense', the ability to imagine, the capacity for fantasy... but a *need* to believe? Unless that means as a kind of crutch, I'm not sure I relate to that at all. Do I feel better thinking that there are other life forms in the universe or that I was created by some omnipotent being? Can't honestly say I do...

Oh well, each to their own.

  8. you are right but it is probably like some people are adictive to things while the next guy isn't
probably works in the same way -i don't believe all that stuff either lol

  9. I think we all have a need for escapism on some level. I could never get enough of Tolkien's books, and a carefull observer will notice that I was inordinately fond of the short lived television series "Firefly" but I recognize that as simple escapism. Its potentially dangerous when people take fantasy like that and begin to blend it into reality.

  10. Millions of `sane` men and women believe there`s a god of one sort or another. It`s not such a leap from that to this.

  11. That looming 12/21/12 date is not just hype and science fiction.

On that specific date the plane of our solar system will become aligned with the super massive black hole in the center of the Milky Way galaxy.

This happens once every 25,800 years or so as our sun ends its journey through the 12 signs of the zodiac. In that sense we are living in a very unique time right now, astronomically speaking. We are quickly approaching the end of the 'Platonic Year' as the zodiac cycle is sometimes called.

Certain ancient cultures such as the Mayans placed tremendous significance on this phenomenon and felt the position of our sun in relation to the galactic center is very important. They viewed the time we are in now as a time of great change and the 12/21/12 date as the end of the age.

One of the Mayan pyramids was designed to specifically predict the 12/21/12 date which will be the winter solstice in 2012. I suspect the pyramids at Giza in Egypt also predict this date in some way.

This gets into the idea of archeo astronomy where people think those ancient monuments predict the position and movement of the stars and constellations over thousands of years.

The three pyramids at Giza correspond in relative size and position to the three stars in the belt of Orion as those stars appeared over Egypt in 10,500 BC. This indicates the date of construction of those wonders of the world and suggests some sort of mystical relationship between our human race and Orion.

The ancient Egyptians believed that the goddess Isis came from the stars, perhaps from somewhere in Orion.

As far as what exactly is going to happen in 2012 I don't think anyone is really sure. But I don't think it's a purely scientific issue.

This gets into the idea of astrology and how the stars and constellation foretell the destiny of mankind.

I find my daily horoscope on this web site to be accurate:

    www.astro.com

The horoscopes on that web site talk about the influences that will be present on any given day. This information can be very informative and helpful for people to better understand themselves I think. Often we don't have enough time or patience to stop and think about the root causes of our feelings and behavior.

There's a very strange theory that on the day someone is born the constellations will be in the exact same position they were in on the day they died at the end of their most recent past life on earth.

The origins of the zodiac are very mysterious. The ancients believed that those stars influenced how the earth was formed all of those unimaginable eons ago and they continue to influence us now.

Interestingly the vision of the prophet Ezekiel in the bible of the four living creatures corresponds to the four fixed signs of the zodiac (lion, bull, eagle, man).

  13. Have you read the Popol Vuh? I have. Please, if you have, I'd love for you to review it on this group. If you haven't, then make that a goal for the coming Roman year?

  14. "The three pyramids at Giza correspond in relative size and position to the three stars in the belt of Orion as those stars appeared over Egypt in 10,500 BC. This indicates the date of construction of those wonders of the world..."

Without taking into account how long those monuments took hundreds of slaves to build.

"...and suggests some sort of mystical relationship between our human race and Orion..."

    No, it doesn't.

  18. Jeff mate, I will refrain from telling it like it is, regarding how I perceive you and your posts/replies. My words would not be polite. Rest assured, as long as I have any influence in this forum, any comments like this by you will be dissected as you see here. I'm very interested at this point to see how you respond to the questions asked.

  19. One last thing. Ezekiel. Eagle. I assume Ezekiel was from around the Middle East? Did they have Eagles then? Had he any concept whatsoever of what an Eagle was, or might the 'zodiac' have been invented at a far earlier time, which might make sense? Dammit, you have me looking up Eagles now!

  20. That alignment means our sun will get into an eclipse type of orientation with the super massive black hole in the center of the galaxy. This is similar to how the moon perfectly covers our sun during a solar eclipse.

By an unimaginable cosmic fact the moon is exactly 400 times closer to the earth than the sun and 400 times smaller. This is how the moon can exactly cover the sun to within a few millimeters during a solar eclipse.

Scientists now realize that there are super massive black holes in the center of almost all galaxies. These black holes are the crucibles of creation really.

During the early stages of galaxy formation the super massive black holes begin absorbing all of the surrounding matter. But at some point they start emitting gigantic jets of energy that extend out into space for unimaginable distances.

I don't think this is still happening for our Milky Way galaxy because it is a more mature galaxy. But yet the energy jet is still there.

So on 12/21/12 our sun and the earth are going to be struck by this energy beam.

  21. Ok I made a note of the Popul Vuh but haven't read it. I can't promise anything as far as will I read it.

    I did read:

Maya Cosmogenesis 2012: The True Meaning of the Maya Calendar End-Date by John Major Jenkins and Terence McKenna (Paperback - Aug 1, 1998)

I wasn't bad. It has a four star rating on amazon.com which is what I gave it.

John Major Jenkins is a well known author about the 2012 idea. I have seen him one some TV shows. Like you he doesn't think the end of the world is coming. The 2012 date is the end of the Mayan Long Count calendar.

I have this book here now but haven't read it yet:

2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl by Daniel Pinchbeck (Paperback - Sep 6, 2007)

Personally I believe Doomsday is coming. It has all been foretold in Superman The Man Of Steel # 18 (6 + 6 + 6 !).

When Doomsday first broke out of the containment unit he had one hand tied behind his back. But he was still a devastating monster even then.

Eventually he got totally free when Superman and the other Avengers tried to kill him with their various death rays. All they did was disintegrate what was left of the cables.

That's when all hell broke loose.

  22. There is no way in hell that the Great Pyramid could have been constructed by slaves using manual labor.

We could not create something like the Great Pyramid today. Actually we could not even conceive of something like that today.

It is only relatively recently that people are beginning to fathom what the Great Pyramid really was. It was at one time a working machine like a sort of nuclear reactor.

The pyramid created a circuit that connected the energy that streams down from the stars with the center of the earth:

The Giza Power Plant : Technologies of Ancient Egypt by Christopher Dunn (Paperback - Aug 1, 1998)

That book is probably the greatest 'new age' type of book of all time. It contains the scientific evidence you seek that proves beyond any shadow of a doubt that the pyramids in Egypt were not created using any sort of technology that is in the public domain today.

Whether or not the government knows about some of those technologies is another matter. They might. There is some speculation that the HAARP device in Alaska is intended to harness those types of awesome forces and provide new ways for mankind to destroy itself:

Haarp: The Ultimate Weapon of the Conspiracy (The Mind-Control Conspiracy Series) by Jerry E. Smith (Paperback - Aug 1998)

The pyramids were created using methods which we are not currently aware of.

Anti gravity forces were used to make the stones very light so that one man could pick up a stone which normally weighs many tons.

This is really the only explanation for how so many stones, some weighing 80 tons, could have been placed with such uncanny precision.

But it's not only the question of HOW they were able to do it. There's also the question of WHY.

There are many other questions about Egypt such as how they were able to carve gigantic underground complexes into solid rock.

Our world today is much too unstable to know about things like this.

Nick Cook, in his book The Hunt For Zero Point, suggests that entire industries exist today which are trying to solve technical problems which were in reality solved decades ago. This creates the ultimate smoke screen to confuse and mislead the public and the world about the true state of military technology.

He says that anti gravity drives are used in the B2 bomber and the specs for this plane prove that the engines would not be powerful enough to lift the plane during takeoff. So anti gravity technology is used to make the plane lighter during takeoff.

Cook says that back in the 1950s many magazines contained articles about anti gravity drives. Then all of a sudden those types of articles completely disappeared from the public domain.

The Hunt for Zero Point: Inside the Classified World of Antigravity Technology by Nick Cook (Paperback - Aug 12, 2003)
