20 years ago the Berlin wall was opened

On 9th November 1989 the German people were the happiest people of the world! After 20 years of separation people of Germany West and and Germany East opened the wall and could meet again, the confused border guards let them go. This moment marked the end of the German Democratic Republic and the start of the reunion of the German Republic.

Look how happy we were!

  2. "Look how happy we were!" That statement gives a feeling of reserve and second thought as all is not well in the country. Since the amalgamation or reunification the burden of West Germany to modernise and satisfy the needs of East Germany has cost Trillions to west Germany over the years and still has a long way to go. There still is a disparity between the East and West in the unemployment levels and many in the Eastern part still hanker for the old style of governance because they had jobs and self respect. Add to this that Germany as a whole takes a huge burden of monetary support to the rest of the EU countries thus further putting pressure on its ability to do so albeit it is the strongest manufacturing country in the EU, there must eventually come a time when it will have to say " Stop, we have had enough, we must consider our own people first, we can only do so much, let others take more of the strain." I am not German, but I am a realist and I do sympathise with the Germans lot but such is the way of politics and fairness is not in the politicos book.

  3. You are right, wurzle2. And well informed. Additionally to your points there is still a dissatisfaction how the Kohl administration took it all over. Nothing of the achievements of the former DDR/GDR was worth a second consideration for them, especially not the idea of a big part of the dissidents to keep their own republic, but with democracy and civil rights. In my opinion this is a missed chance in history.
