Twitter is an excellent medium for world leaders to keep the people informed on their thoughts and actions, but it can also lead to awkward situations. Yesterday evening the Turkish President Abdullah Gül tweeted that he enjoyed watching the Oscar nominated movie ‘The King’s Speech’ at home with his wife. An interesting status update, since the film has not premiered in Turkish theaters yet, nor is it available on DVD anywhere else.
The same has crossed my mind in the past. I have been known to download - who doesn't? I noticed when a friend blogged only this weekend about 'Black Swan', he referred to 'leaving the theater' [sic]. This almost made me double-take. People still go to cinemas?
AntwortenLöschenAlso, being a prominent politician, and this a movie of political interest, it's not inconceivable he might have received a pre-release promo as a gift.
I guess that's what diplomat pouches are for....
AntwortenLöschenI could not help but smile: Just to IMAGINE him sneaking out to one of the backstreet where bootlegged movies are sold at $1 a piece... sneak back to his palace and tell his wife with a big smile that he got it!
AntwortenLöschenOr, that he struggles with the internet to find a download site, which would be illegal, and then trying to erase all the cookies and such not leave a trace behind...
A more plausible answer is that he was simply lying. He had not watched ANY movie that night, but did not want to tell what he did. So he told a story: We watched a movie.... (which one..?) ehhem "The Black Swan", because that was the name which came to his mind.
I guess this would be a good material for the Turkish Media.
Since Jan has direct connection to them, perhaps someone here should bring this to her attention.
