Last Thursday German chancellor Angela Merkel declared that her government plans to close its nuclear power plants in a "measured exit"; the decision to end Germany's nuclear power program was a result of the continuing nuclear crisis in Japan; some believe that Chancellor Merkel's announcement is driven more by politics than safety concerns; recent polls show that 80 percent of voters are opposed to nuclear power; Merkel's party faces close regional elections in states where nuclear plants are located; Switzerland, Venezuela, and China have also announced that they will suspend or delay plans to build new nuclear plants.

I maintain that if the correct form of nuclear energy had been developed [NUCLEAR FUSION instead od NUCLEAR FISSION Japan's problem would exist and we on the planet would be privy to an inexhaustible source of energy. I understand why they might want to get out!
AntwortenLöschenNever trust Merkel. I'm afraid she makes waves to lull us in a false sense of security. She always was pro big business and atom energy.
AntwortenLöschenShe just re-opened a discussion we had years ago and which ended with a compromise of the former green-red Schroeder administration for an exit of the atom energy. She abolished this exit unnecessarily last year for her friends of the atom business and since then the anti atom movement is active again. Not nice in a year with 8 elections in the Federal states.
Just to make it clear, we had this exit already!!! :(
Hang on a minute.... Isn't Merkel just about up for re-election again?
AntwortenLöschenPinch of salt, folks, pinch of salt!!
Given there's no geological fault lines running underneath, or even near, Germany I'd suggest Angela Merkal is confusing teutonic with tectonic (or could it simply be votes?). The Greens have become a growing force in German politics and she is playing to an audience. Nuclear is relatively safe if you follow three simple rules: Don't build where there is a high risk of earthquakes, don't build on a coast where there is any risk of a tsunami and ideally, as well as having a back-up power system, do build them beneath a hydro-electric dam where, if all else fails, the facility can be flooded and cooled and the water used channeled as appropriate or re-used.
AntwortenLöschenI agree - the short term might bite her in the a$$
AntwortenLöschenMerkel is the daughter of the one and only EAST GERMAN (DDR) Christian Cleric who had puzzlingly generous privileges at the German Democratic Republic of the past, such as a free pass to travel in WEST GERMANY as he wished AND he was provided with a AUTOMOBILE by the GDR (DDR) government.
AntwortenLöschenMerkel herself was an active member of the East German Communist Youth Organization.
She has made a SPECTACULAR transition from being a Communist Youth leader into becoming a spectacular conservative capitalist PM of the UNIFIED Germany.
Hence, she CERTAINLY can trump ANY of her contemporaries in the world.
You are right Gurcan. I forgot to mention her GDR history. And that she started her carrier in the Christian Democratic Party with the nick "Kohl's Girl", but was the first to suggest to distance them from Kohl, after he got involved into a dubious party financing scandal. This woman knows how politics run and can be used for advantage of her own goals.

AntwortenLöschenI think she is the STANDARD of what a "politician" is.
AntwortenLöschenThere should be a WIKIPEDIA entry:
search: POLITICIAN
search result: see MERKEL
