I know some of you have already signed the petition, but many of you may still be unaware of this. I thought this was important to share.
Why is this a big deal?
It's a big deal because Multiply is still operating (indeed; they're the only major social-net which is still so-operating) under the TOS's which were used by Facebook and the others - they literally hold the right to your material, and may use it any way they choose
More extensive explanation:

In what way is Multiply's TOS the same as Facebooks? On Facebook, the clause that people had a problem with was that Facebook maintained rights to your content even after you had deleted it. On Multiply, when you delete your content, your content is gone and only remains on Multiply's servers (in case you write to CS desperately begging them to restore something) and then it's gone, gone, gone. They don't retain any rights to it at that point. It is Entirely Different than what Facebook had.

AntwortenLöschenWell, I just reposted a short excerpt from someone else's post, which I linked to. The rationale for the petition is explained in greater detail there. I did not really analyze how it is or is not different from Facebook - personally, I consider Multiply much superior to Facebook in many ways.
AntwortenLöschenPerhaps there is a misunderstanding here - well, then, it will be cleared up. My intention was to make people aware of this petition, nothing more - I trust each can decide for themselves.
Well, thanks for clarifying this, Meg.
AntwortenLöschenI am not a lawyer and have to believe what others tell me. What I can't support anyway is that somebody takes my stuff and has a right to sell it without even telling me, not to speak about asking me before. This has to be clear unambiguously for all. When the current upheaval leads to more clearness it is worth doing.
AntwortenLöschenwho is selling your stuff?
AntwortenLöschenI don't know. And I don't know if the TOS gives Multiply a right to do so. As I said, I'm not a lawyer and English isn't my first language. Take it as a statement, not as a suspicion, please.
AntwortenLöschenAnd I have seen those deleted posts as well. And I don't think this is a good style.
no, it doesn't.
AntwortenLöschenthe whole reason i started the post in the user support group is because i understand that this stuff really is confusing. but that's why it's good to discuss it. i'd encourage you to look through the terms of service (or even just the parts referred to in the petition), find the parts that don't make sense and ask about them.
we shouldn't have to be lawyers to understand the TOS and, with a little talking it out together, i think we Can actually make sense of the terms without a lawyers help. they are understandable if you work your way through them. but just taking someone else's word for it (mine or anyone else's) means you'll never really be certain what's going on.
please feel free to join the user support post and ask questions. that's what it's there for. :-)
I will, Meg! :-)
