Guantanamo detainees get new $750G soccer field
At a time of record deficits, a new soccer field for detainees at Camp 6 in Guantanamo Bay is just getting the finishing touches -- at a cost of $750,000 to taxpayers.
The project was the highlight of a tour Tuesday of the detention camp for reporters at the facility covering the arraignment in a military court of Majid Khan, a former Baltimore resident and the the only legal U.S. resident on trial at Guantanamo.
The project began in April 2011 and is due to finish this spring. The detainees will now have three recreation facilities at Camp 6, which is home to "highly compliant" detainees who live in a communal setting.

NEW YORK — The prison is known more for the accusation that it’s a gulag than for goulash, but a new cookbook aims to counter the reputation of the detention center at U.S. Naval Base Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Several hundred recipes prepared for the inmates at the camp are to be published next month in “The Gitmo Cookbook,” including dishes such as mustard-and-dill baked fish and honey-and-ginger chicken breast.
Baked Tandouri Chicken Breast, Mustard-Dill Baked Fish, Lyonnaise Rice, and Fish Amandine are just a few of the recipes you’ll find in the Gitmo Cookbook. We’ve tested them, and they are inexpensive, easy to make, and delicious.
WHY ARE MY TAX DOLLARS GOING TO CODDLE WAR CRIMINALS??????
The US is throwing people into prison indefinitely, often without any formal charges, no real evidence of any crime, no due process of law. If the US is going to do that, then at least they can provide decent living facilities. Maybe build something like the Island in "The Prisoner".
AntwortenLöschenFor one, they are not war criminals. This whole "War on Terror" with the whole world as a battlefield is so much cow dung.
AntwortenLöschenGuantanamo is a shame for human race, it should be closed, those who are still there without any formal charges, no real evidence of any crime, should be free.
AntwortenLöschenSecretcorners, every member can post here, so feel free to post threads that aren't propaganda for one or the other side, it will be appreciated. Sometimes it is hard to decide in which section we post something and the admins try not to be too nitpicky. Randy usually observes the rules.
1. Everyone has an agenda so every post is "propaganda."
AntwortenLöschen2. More often than not, when someone shouts "propaganda" they really mean "I don't share this particular view point".
3. You can always view a particular post and choose not to reply.
4. secretcorners - I hope you stay because I enjoy your input.
I hope that, too!
AntwortenLöschenI stand corrected; maybe I did not read carefully enough..
AntwortenLöschen"Blog is basically reserved for our member’s own writing. Copy-pasted material, videos, pictures must have an additional personal comment"
Guantanamo is nothing more than a concentration camp for people that the US wants to interned indefinitely. What are the criteria that gets one picked up off the street and thrown into Guantanamo? Very little, nothing more than on the say that they are terrorists or aiding and abetting terrorist. The current President stated he was going to close Guantanamo and even issued an Executive Order (or some such legal document) for it to be closed. However, what he fail to add was that they were simply going to create a Guantanamo some place else. They have declared some of the detainees were not guilty of any wrongdoing, but are now too dangerous to be let free; by torturing them and denying their freedom they have made them possible terrorists, or that there is no where to place them so the answer is to keep them locked up forever and ever.
AntwortenLöschenI wrote the 'rules' on this group. I always used the word 'guidelines', to indicate that they are flexible. Baglava may have made alterations - I haven't looked.
AntwortenLöschenWhat's the problem? Another ambiguous word is 'preferred', as opposed to 'essential'. Members' own writing in the blog section is preferred. More original writing, especially if it's exclusive to the group = a good standard of quality, to my mind. I suppose that depends on the writing lol.
I agree with Randy in that all have their own agenda, and in that sense all opining on current affairs is 'propaganda'. I'm not keen on his opinion about many things, nor is he keen on mine. But we understand each other, I think.
Top of the homepage, a claim is made that we are the largest 'neutral' such group on Multiply. I believe that is still the case to this day, and for it to remain possible to make that claim, we need to have members who will not always see eye to eye. The most radical, both ends, have generally been got rid of. But as things stand, like his politics or not, Randy's willingness to participate here is one of the ingredients that made this project work. Without these views, we lose that balance. Seems to me he is willing and capable of doing that even if he has to be the ONLY person here with those sorts of views. I applaud that, and if and when I find I find a post I dislike strongly enough, I just don't comment.
Guantanamo is a boil on the arse [sic] of The Empire, and Obama let us all down by not closing it.
Ok, an American taxpayer has a right to be concerned that their tax dollars might be providing would-be terrorists with an a la carte menu... but even prisoners have to be fed to a reasonable standard. We are supposed to be civilised.
Torture? Indefinite detention without trial? You don't beat the Devil by becoming Him. My opinion.
Sorry if I butted in where I shouldn't, Ulla. Not my job here any more :)
Randy - even when I get the feeling you're trying to wind me/us up, thanks for posting at all.
Links go in links, videos in videos etc. A certain amount of copied material in the blog is pretty much inevitable, isn't it?
You're welcome here, Mike! :D
AntwortenLöschenIt's impossible to please everyone all the time, anyway. If a new member joins and the first thing they see is a picture of the Quran on fire, or whatever it is that rubs them the wrong way, they might sometimes turn around and decide not to participate. That is a shame, but it too is inevitable. The most over-sensitive and the ones who enjoy poking them with a pointy stick, probably don't belong anyway. I try and post diverse material on the things that interest me, and I'm not at all surprised at the stuff we get here. Besides maybe me, Randy's probably this group's most consistent poster. Last person who left told me it was because it seemed mostly about the Middle East and that sort of thing - terrorism etc - and they would have liked to see more on Europe, the situation with Greece and so on.
AntwortenLöschenIdeally, I'd love to see more posts, even just a link, whatever... from those members I know are active. I can think of at least 20 members whose faces I see often, but I can't recall the last thing they put on here. That's not a criticism, just saying that if they all added something, the more diverse it would become...
What's the consensus in Germany on the bailout, Ulla? (new thread...) ;)
I don't see Guantanamo, or any replacements, as just a US issue. Concentration camps is a world wide issue. Plus, the UK is a lapdog to the US and took part in either handing over "suspects" to the US or allowing the US to operate on British soil.
AntwortenLöschenBy the way, if you look back, I had already reprimanded myself. :-).
AntwortenLöschenHey Thanks!
AntwortenLöschenWe need more participation from other members on this site. I post here in order to try to give this place some life. My posts are meant to generate debate on issues. I do not attempt to hide my biases and agenda.
For those that do not already know; I am a right wing, neo con, Bush Cheney supporting conservative. That's who I am.
I like debating and listening to different viewpoints and that's why I post here. I respect all who care to offer up differing opinions. I do not take any of this personally. I have kids in grade school and bills to pay so that is what I take seriously. I do this for fun and because I am passionate about what I believe!
POSTING FROM THE HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS KANSAS CITY, MO!
It's not a US Issue. Every war throughout mankind has resulted in each waring party taking prisoners of war. This has happened in every recorded war in history. Sometimes the prisoners are killed, sometimes they never come home (Vietnam) and sometimes they are set free at the conclusion of hostilities.
AntwortenLöschenYou take prisoners of war, like the Brits did in WW2, so they cannot be set free to go back to the battlefield to kill you. This makes sense right?
The USA has taken prisoners of war.
Why the outrage when we do it? Why the double standard?
Who are you at 'war' with?
AntwortenLöschen
AntwortenLöschenwow, i d k, but is this what Jesus meant when he said to love your enemy?
I Cr 13:8a
I see this as a potentially successful psychological operation. Those who've behaved themselves get a reward. Treating them less like criminals may be likely to help their rehabilitation. I haven't seen any numbers documenting the results, however, so judgment is set aside for the time being.
AntwortenLöschenIt's not a situation suitable for every inmate. So long as criminals don't become revered by the state or otherwise along the way, it could be beneficial.
