MOSCOW (AP) — Russia's Foreign Ministry has attacked America's human rights record in its first report on injustice elsewhere in the world, offering examples such as the Guantanamo Bay prison and wrongful death row convictions to paint the U.S. as hypocritical for lecturing other nations on the subject of rights.
"The situation in the United States is a far cry from the ideals that Washington proclaims," says the report released Wednesday.

U.S. Human Rights Slammed
29 December 2011
The Foreign Ministry has attacked the U.S. human rights record in a report on injustice and violations around the globe.

In the paper published on Wednesday, Moscow criticized U.S. President Barack Obama for "legalizing indefinite and extrajudicial custody and the return of court-martials."

In its first-ever report on breaches of human rights abroad, Russia focused on EU nations, Canada and Georgia, but spent the most time on the United States.

The ministry has in the past criticized accusations of human rights breaches from the U.S. State Department.

[JURIST] The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) [official website] issued a report on Wednesday strongly criticizing the human rights record of a number of countries including the United States. Twenty pages of the 90-page report focus on the United States [AP report], and list a number of practices and conditions that the MFA views as violations of basic human rights. Among the concerns raised were alleged invasions of personal privacy, purported mistreatment of Muslim Americans since the 9/11 terror attacks [JURIST Feature], and judicial errors which have permitted innocent people to be convicted of capital crimes. The MFA report also highlights the "notorious" military prison at Guantanamo Bay [JURIST news archive], and rebukes US President Barack Obama [official profile] for "legalizing indefinite and extrajudicial custody" of those prisoners. The report also criticizes Canada, European Union nations, and some former Soviet states. It excludes the Middle East and Asia.
...Earlier this month, Russian human rights officials levied specific complaints against the United States regarding the conviction [JURIST report] of ex-oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky [defense website; JURIST news archive]. Many of the issues addressed in the report have faced scrutiny the US as well. Concerns surrounding capital punishment [JURIST op-ed] and the Guantanamo Bay prison [JURIST op-ed] have been voiced by JURIST contributors.

Russia has accused the United States and NATO of large-scale violations of human rights during the military operation in Libya, including the deliberate murder of its leader Muammar Gaddafi and the killing of hundreds of civilians.

The NATO forces “made the overthrow and murder of the Colonel their main goal,” said the Russian Foreign Ministry in its first report on the state of human rights in the world.

The rights and liberties of the citizens of the Russian Federation are granted by Chapter 2 of the Constitution adopted in 1993.[1]
Russia is the signatory to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and has also ratified a number of other international human rights instruments, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (fully) and the European Convention of Human Rights (with reservations). These international law instruments take precedence over national legislation according to Chapter 1, Article 15 of the Constitution.[1]
As a member of the Council of Europe Russia has international obligations related to the issue of human rights.[citation needed]

  2. Dude!
Enough... you had me at the Google link ;-)

I don't think anyone but the Cons here would disagree with the Russians assertions.
I know i don't. Many of us Progressives have been saying for years that it is hypocritical of us to be lecturing others on human rights while we are engaged in abuses ourselves.
I'd also add Civil rights abuses. Especially just recently with the latest spate of mostly GOP led states imposing ridiculous restrictions on voter rights in the name of preventing voter fraud.
Preventing Democratic votes is more like it.

  3. Notice the deafening silence from the Cons here... either that or they'll be here to whine or attack.

  4. I recall about this time last year, Wikileaks revealing Russia to be a 'Mafia state'. I don't think either side in this should be thrwoing stones, as Baglava said. I notice China are staying quiet about it.

As for 'Cons'... there aren't that many on SLG. I'd rather not bait the ones who aren't. I don't even see the usual suspects in the viewing history on certain topics... people are interested in what they're interested in. If I post about Iran or North Korea, different story.

  5. With all the other stuff going on around this - a few comparable international media, protests akin to 'Occupy', new rules allowing independents to run for the Kremlin, Clinton's criticism of the elections, failure to agree on missile shield with NATO, building a new 100 tonne missile, loaning nuclear sub to India, Russia's entry into WTO, the journalist's murder in the Caucasus this month - we just get a much more complete picture. :)
