A Palestinian negotiator said on Saturday that the Palestinian authorities were not going to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, a move which would cripple the peace process between the two nations.
Israeli-Palestinian negotiations resumed in early September after being stalled for almost two years. The Israelis demand that Israel be recognized by the Palestinian National Authority as a Jewish state, otherwise they said establishing peace would be impossible.
Nabil Shaath, a member of Central Committee of the Fatah movement controling the West Bank, said during a public lecture in Ramallah that direct peace talks would be halted if Israel continued settlement construction in the occupied territory.
"The decision is in the Israeli government's hands," he said.

Foreign Minister tells British counterpart that there is no chance Israel will extend moratorium on construction in West Bank settlements beyond Sept. 26 expiration date.
They will recognize Israel as a state within old borders..not with current stolen land.
AntwortenLöschenLooks like this one's going to rumble on for quite a while. But I guess we were all resigned to that.
AntwortenLöschenMy first reaction is that they both should be spanked and sent to their rooms.
AntwortenLöschenHowever, the two issues are far from equal in importance. The "Jewish state" issue-- it would seem that should be negotiated last, when Israel and Palestine are prepared to recognize one another as states with specified borders, and call one another any name that can be said on TV
At this point insisting on a particular status-title is a lot like saying "Admit we're in control and you're the beggar.", which is kind of true, but there's no need to rub their noses in it.
The settlements, on the other hand, are the alligators in the swamp. How can Israel claim to negotiate draining the swamp while adding more alligators? Obviously Netanyahu doesn't quite get it yet, and it may be time to whisper in his ear "stop them,or else..."

Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, appealed early today to the Palestinian leadership to continue direct negotiations for a peace deal despite his refusal to prevent the resumption of Jewish settlement construction in the West Bank.
The midnight deadline set for an end to the partial freeze on settlement building passed amid last ditch international attempts to broker a compromise between Israel and a Palestinian leadership demanding that the ten month moratorium be prolonged.
In a clear message to settlers and the Israeli political hard right, Mr Netanyahu had earlier called on "the residents in Judea and Samaria [the West Bank] and the political parties to show restraint and responsibility today and in the future" as it had during the moratorium.
