Land To The Tillers - Blog Action Day Sept 15th 2010

Adapted from a post on my own blog...

The plight of these peasant farmers, people being kidnapped and murdered - apparently by the state - first came to my attention around four years ago through people in the Republic of Philippines here on Multiply, most notably 'Kitrosky'.  I would not know about this if not for the internet.

What's going on in The Philippines is very much the kind of thing that interests me... I posted a video about Hacienda Luisita here last November, when I first heard about that.  I mention this because, I am ashamed to admit... I still today know very little more.  So little that I really don't feel qualified to write about this... I'm on the other side of the world and I never followed up that video with some background reading... but today is 'Blog Action Day' in support of these farmers, and in memory of the massacre, so I must do what I can do to raise awareness of this.

Here follow that video and some links for your information.  If you are interested in 'Fair Trade',  the corrupt activities of huge multinational companies like Coca Cola and Nestle, corporatocracy and puppet governments, workers' rights, or simply justice for people who are outgunned and need a hand... this is for you.

Please spread the word.

  1. I don't know if they're all writing on this, but here are some of the best Filipino writers (in English) I've read, over the years, you may wish to check out...

    dcsillada
    otsopya
    swerver
    plorwaks
    keisv
    kitrotsky

    zytrexx
    pinoycinderella

There are few others, a very cyber-aware, networked nation of prolific young bloggers. Go see...

  2. I see the censors are hard at work remixedphoenix deleting replies and blogs in SLG to control the opinions of the group is a cowardly act.
If you simply let the group debate without your constant interference, people of diverse opinions may find they actually like one another, and consider others opinions. You refuse them that, by removing those you do not like and that keeps your echo chamber intact. Sad, for all whom desire discussion. Discussion you promote here is ,lets all talk about how we all agree. Boring.

  3. Have some respect for the topic. I'm not closing this one.

Just replied as sensibly as I can on your Elephant's post... converse if you will. Your attempts to terrorise me and this group will not lead to negotiation.

What it is you want, anyway?

  5. Simply to show you, you can not censor free speech and others debate because you can not handle a topic or diverse opinions. That reputation will follow you.

Your need to control will not work with me. You may learn you are wrong in your assumptions.

  6. I would just like you to stay away, and I will do likewise in return, if you wish. The spectrum here does not run left to right... the ultra-conservative US, typically rather anti-Islamic end of that scale, I decided to exclude altogether. Rather, we run east to west, north to south... its a global thing. Are you really listening? The politics you demonstrate, and the unwillingness to communicate like an adult, are not wanted here. Nor are the extremes on the other end of said global spectrum - we just cut the ends off, in pursuit of civilised dialogue. Your tantrum is the first of its kind on this group, and will be dealt with, one way or the other, decisively.

Say something new? Nobody here cares about what you've been complaining about thus far. The numbers have gone up, not down.

    ________

    Your reply...

Ok, I've been shown. I cannot censor you. I can shut this group entirely, but I won't. Instead, we shall pursue getting the technology changed. Removing you will not work - like all terrorists, if we take you out, you'll just come back worse. You're clearly not unintelligent - haven't you got anything better to do with your time?

Any Filipinos who find this invasion, on this post, offensive... please feel free to take it up with Multiply. More the merrier.

  7. A request to let the group debate to promote understanding without your interference you consider an invasion. How curious.

  8. I will put it to a vote - closed to group members only, to finish end of October, whereupon the results will be revealed to you, I would hope showing a strong consensus. If I lose, I step down and you're allowed back in. Whether Ayla or anyone else is let back in will be up to the remaining admins. If you lose, you, Burtha, Ayla and all your alter-egos, leave this issue alone. I can only play fair?

The other 5 admins already voted privately, and were unanimous. They don't want me to step down.

I carved this group how I want, Jill. It works. Why is that your business when you're not part of it? This is going nowhere... as long as it stays a productive conversation, I'll keep having it. But you don't seem to understand 'no'. As things stand, you're not welcome. That MAY change if I lose a group vote.

    Shall we do that?

  10. That is irrelevant to me weather you stay or go. I suggest you simply let the group debate without censoring opinions you may not agree with. Stop interfering in others debates, be neutral as you say on the front page.
Stop deleting replies, and banning people for diverse opinions. That can only help ,if you indeed are looking for debate.
    Goodnight.

  11. There is an element of this which is good, and privately I'd like to have my time more free, do less here.

But no. The only people banned are those whose participation was detrimental to the whole - ie: the persistent, sly, aggressive, one-track flooding negative posters. Someone has to make the decisions, and that was me. I've explained in full already, which customer service can see, the criteria used to determine who we wanted here, and where the line is drawn on what kind of topics.

I see that 'less is more' admin 'interference' can work, as it does over at Elephant's Memory. But because of the nature of this place, we found that if we do that, and give the Jihadists and the Islamophobes etc, free reign, good people leave or are afraid to engage because the atmosphere becomes very aggressive and hostile. It was also determined, by sidramone actually, that 'international news' CAN be domestic... US news or Chinese news is international to ME, it's just the relevance that's important.

There are many other groups where you can argue in that way. We don't need to change. It may just be that we will have to close the doors on you until the technology allows us to prevent non-members from harrassment like you've displayed the last few days. I DO understand what you're saying, Jill. But I don't see any need to apply it here... go try Robust Debate, Political Souls Uncensored or Elephants Memory. They're likely to be more to your tastes.

  12. This is important. This group was NOT conceived as a 'debate' at all. I have said that already, but before, you weren't listening. Please understand this now. This is not even meant to be a 'debate' group, but rather a collection of information on the core topics. It's done pretty well at that in the 18 months or so it's been here, and has remained virtually troll free.

What's to debate, anyway? I recognise that there are radicals and nutters who want to blow things up. So?

  13. If you want to comment productively on Hacienda Luisita or the situation in the Philippines...

    now that would be progress.

    AntwortenLöschen
  14. Tricky balance. When you allow people to reply to blogs, that is an impossible goal. My posts were immediately replied to and debate began. Perhaps that is something members here do not understand.Especially the attack squad that is intolerant of some topics who's replies seek response.

I like the change to the front page that helps clear up the groups intentions. Perhaps a note saying " "this is a news gathering forum, not a debate group. Admin chooses the topics allowed."

    Have a nice day.
    Jill

  15. That's really cute, lol, you already banned those that may vote against you and many quit, how could you lose with who is left. HA,ha,ha, ha, dammit, i'm starting to like you.

    AntwortenLöschen
  16. Don't push your luck.

As for the 'attack squad', I'll take that on board as a tight-lipped stoic administrator, like any other complaint. I know what you mean, I don't like it at RD, and I won't have it happening here, IF it is making people unwelcome. I know who they are, and so do they. I don't think any will rock this boat quite like you've attempted to.

Your liking me or not is neither nor there. I can't afford to give you an inch after this week's antics.

    AntwortenLöschen
  17. You better not, not liking you that much, lol.

    AntwortenLöschen
  18. Er, hello to both of you. Miss Jill, I don't like censorship as much as you do. But there's also a thing called respect. At the earlier part of the thread, I was a bit insulted that an issue which is very important to us here in the Philippines was flooded with comments that weren't relevant to it. Filipino activists are often victimized by this tactic in their posts especially by government provocateurs who want to veer attention away from our issues. Anyway, if you guys want to debate this censorship issue, may I suggest that we open a separate thread? This issue may not be as important to non-Filipinos but it is very much so to us who have lost friends and colleagues in the bloody massacre and want the world to know that almost daily an activist dies in the Philippines. Thank you for posting the link above, Miss Jill. Perhaps our issues can reach global attention after all. And I hope your issues may be settled through a civilized compromise.

    AntwortenLöschen
  19. Please, Jill. I do thank you for a video that is worthwhile here on this thread... but your input is not welcome on this group. You waived any claim to meaningful participation with your tantrum last week. Far as I'm concerned, your intentions simply cannot be trusted, so unfortunately there will be no compromise. I will probably have to close the whole thing as some others do. It won't do too much harm... in fact I quite like the idea. A few slight adjustments, plain sailing. If you genuinely want to discuss the Hacienda Luisita issue, you might do so on your own group? That's an audience that I'd imagine is largely unaware of it.

I did, above, invite you to comment productively. I see that. I changed my mind. Good day.

    AntwortenLöschen
  20. There is also one called People Power, largely anti-corporate and so on, Philippine-based. Try there?

    AntwortenLöschen
  21. So censor it, that's quite expected of you. Your not real stable of mind, are you !!

    AntwortenLöschen
  22. I'm really sorry the off-topic conversation that took place here was necessary - you've seen how they've hijacked every thread they could, with no respect for the issues at hand. Her more meaningful input later in this thread is a false front - she only went and Googled 'Hacienda Luisita', has no genuine compassion for your people. I doubt she could even show you Quezon City on a map.

The issue of trolls like this trying to bury group(s) which do not favour their particular worldview, is being discussed at the highest level possible. For now, I would prefer not to close this thread, or the whole group... but it looks as if I will have to... thus, the Hacienda Luisita message, here, potentially reaching fewer people. That, unfortunately, is the direct result of this person's selfish behaviour. The best position I can possibly take on this is to absorb what has been said (I have), and hope this individual finds the maturity and respect to look at what she is doing objectively.

I am not interested in negotiating with terrorists, and never will be.

What's new? I don't have much time left here, any good news, on the topic?
