Should Spies, Lies & Geopolitics accept membership requests from Multiply's Online Shops?

We've begun getting membership applications from these online shops, and this prompted a discussion among the admins of this group. We feel, unanimously, that this is a political debate forum, a place for bloggers, intellectuals, people interested in current affairs, history and discussion thereof, and there is no place for those who wish to use it as a market stall to sell various unrelated goods.
So we will be declining these requests. Nor do we have any intention of including a 'Market' section on the group. I guess if we get one selling rare books or other study resources that relate to the topic, and they can give us a good reason they want to be here, then maybe, just maybe... but until then, protecting our members' privacy is paramount. Those who are not members here cannot see who is a member, but they can see public posts like this one, and the shops only want in to get at your details; the numbers we have in here are quite healthy even if participation rate can be relatively low... high numbers and/or thriving activity are always going to attract them.
I thought a poll would say it best. I'm guessing one or two jokers will vote yes, but otherwise I don't imagine any of you want the shops in here? Please vote, and we will have this post to point to in future, to show new applicants when they come, trying to sell their cheap plastic Disney nonsense. Obviously, we aim to be democratic, but this one's a no-brainer, right?
Beyond that, good luck to you, Pez and everyone on the Multiply team (the few we have on board, perhaps you'd like to say a few words on this?), we wish the online shopping angle the best of luck. I'm an online seller myself, using another well-known site. Can be a good place to find bargains. But we don't feel it belongs here on SLG, as I hope this members' poll will reflect.
Dziekuje bardzo,

It doesnt belong here.
AntwortenLöschenThe root of money is the love of all evil. Or something.
AntwortenLöschenSeriously, let's keep the moneychangers out of the temple.
Amen.
AntwortenLöschenI'm fine with people, as themselves, joining the group. But they should use their personal account for that. If their account is an online store, then that's a store trying to join the group and stores don't really have interesting things to say on world affairs, to my knowledge (though they can affect world affairs -- sweat shops and child labor pop immediately to mind).
AntwortenLöschen???
AntwortenLöschenI do not understand what is being proposed...
Would some members post ads?
If so it is ridiculous, unless we get something in exchange... And I can't imagine what that would be...
If I want to go shopping I will go to a shop, there is no point in letting people in to a political group who are going to be pushing their wears... personal accounts are fine, just not shop accounts.
AntwortenLöschenthere are currently two types of accounts in multiply (well, 4 if you include premium versions of each): there's a regular account which involves a person making posts and interacting within groups as a person, and there are "online seller" accounts (or "premium seller" accounts) which are online stores that use multiply as a means of advertising their wares. so a regular account/person could request membership in this group or an online seller account/store could request membership.
AntwortenLöschenso essentially, what is being proposed is that people who want to join the group can join the group. but stores that want to join the group will not be accepted to the group. (if an online seller would like to join the group with their personal account, though, that would be fine.)
And the reason for the poll was just to give visual 'mass' to the policy. So we can point at it and say:
AntwortenLöschen"look, online sellers, our members don't want you here".
A few years ago they dropped adult groups which were a lot more useful to many of us. They wanted to make it into another kiddie site like MySpace and that ilk.
AntwortenLöschenNow they want to also turn it into another E-Bay. I dont care to buy anything online in the first place and I'm sure not going to buy anything from E-bay OR Multiply, especially with their shabby treatment of adults.
I've already gotten "invitations" to join sellers groups or add sellers as contacts, all of which I have ignored or declined. If I want Spam I'll buy a can of it in a real grocery store.
Just curious, Henry. Why your aversion to online shopping at all? I buy and sell a fair bit on Ebay and specialised music / tech sites, and at least as far as CD's go, you can find things online you can't always source so easily on the High Street (or 'mall'). Do you just not like having your numbers out on the web?
AntwortenLöschenthey took porno of line that is the rule or multiply will be closed by the govenment--
AntwortenLöschenI to buy on line all the time especialy books great way to shop--
AntwortenLöschenI join a Debate Group to Debate not to shop. If this is going to occur in other Groups I will be leaving.
AntwortenLöschenI actually think this new venture by Multiply is great. I'd much rather buy items produced by "cottage industry" than the mass produced shyte that's readily available in stores.
AntwortenLöschenHaving said that, I don't believe that a group such as this one is suitable place for them. I can imagine that making the group open on online sellers could create an unwelcome influx of "spam".
