White House spokesman blasts British newspapers...

Rating:★★★★★
Category:Other

Robert Gibbs swatted down reports in British newspapers that suppressed photos of prisoner abuse included graphic ... images of torture and rape — and took a hard shot at the overseas media.

“I want to speak generally about some reports I’ve witnessed over the past few years in the British media. And in some ways, I’m surprised it filtered down,” Gibbs began. “Let’s just say if I wanted to look up — if I wanted to read a writeup today of how Manchester United fared last night in the Champion’s League cup, I might open up a British newspaper. If I was looking for something that bordered on truthful news, I’m not entirely sure it’d be in the first pack of clips I’d pick up.”

“You're not going to find very many of these newspapers and truth within 25 words of each other,” Gibbs continued.

Robert Gibbs should apologise to the British press for his sneering rant

This kind of attack would normally be made against the likes of the North Korean or Iranian state media, but in the current climate of "engagement" with America's enemies the White House is far more likely to attack its own allies. Gibbs' remarks have echoes of a senior State Department official's anti-British statements to The Sunday Telegraph after the appalling handling of the Prime Minister's visit in March.

Can you imagine Gibbs making these remarks about The New York Times or The Washington Post, or NBC, ABC or CBS? This would never happen. The British press, especially the Telegraph, has been singled out because they frequently publish articles critical of the Obama administration and are not afraid to take on the status quo in Washington. Increasingly, millions of Americans are turning to online UK news websites for cutting edge reports on American politics and U.S. foreign policy that the mainstream media refuses to cover in the States, especially if it is unflattering to the Obama White House.

Robert Gibbs' completely unwarranted rant against the British press is an absolute disgrace, and the President should disown his views. An unreserved apology by Gibbs is also in order.

  2. The broadsheets here are in the process of overthrowing the government. It's no surprise he's running scared.

  3. If he means The Sun and other tabloids, he's right. They're full of shit.

The Guardian, Observer and Independent are probably better seen as a politician's worst nightmare... these tell the truth, and consistently so. The Telegraph is a bit more conservative than my tastes, and I'm not into cricket.

  4. The gutterpress has its place. Without it a large proportion of the population probably wouldn't even know who the PM is.

  5. That point of view explains the great welcome they gave to the Brits last time they visited the
White House. No protocol and dumb , dumb gifts . What an embarrassment. Gibbs continues
to prove daily just what kind of ass he is. This like many comments , though some may be true
it has no place being a statement from the podium. Our MSM is packed full of liars and thieves
    on the Ovomit payroll.
Pot calling kettle BLACK? You bet !!

  6. Randy! I thought it was the conservative position that being American meant never apologizing to anyone!

Regardless, I guess the rapes mean that those who said Abu Ghraib was basically the equivalent of fraternity hazing activities must have pledged to REALLY rough fraternities...

  7. I don't know anyone that defended what took place at Abu Ghraib. I have compared many of the enhanced interrogation techniques to fraternity hazing. Loud Music, No Sleep, Lights On ect.....

Maybe this is where you are confused.

For the record, I don't think they should print the pictures. It's an old story. Let it die. I support our President on this.

  8. I don't think there's any reason to print the pictures either. Especially in light of the fact that the story is out there, the information is known, so there can't be a cover-up alleged.

However, there WERE and ARE people getting in line to minimize the Abu Ghraib story. So I'm going to ask again: what fraternity did these folks belong to that they think that rape - sodomizing underage kids - has something to do with fraternities?

Limbaugh: “This is no different than what happens at the Skull and Bones initiation and we're going to ruin people's lives over it and we're going to hamper our military effort, and then we are going to really hammer them because they had a good time. ... I'm talking about people having a good time, these people, you ever heard of emotional release? You ever heard of need to blow some steam off?"

Representative Mica, 2005: "Abu Ghraib, if I hear one more thing about that and the actions of our military folks; someone described ``horrific torture.'' I saw worse things at fraternity houses in college than what our troops were involved in."

Fox and Friends host Greg Kelly: "Paris Hilton’s jail time sounds like Abu Ghraib.”

Christopher Shays: "They did things that were outrageous. But it wasn't torture."

Posing with dead bodies. Rapes. Fraternity pranks.

Maybe it's not just Gibbs who should be apologizing...

  9. Did this happen? Do you have a link?

  10. Randy, do you read what you post? The story about rapes in the British press was what Gibbs was "swatting down" - the topic that led YOU to call for Gibbs to apologize!

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/5395830/Abu-Ghraib-abuse-photos-show-rape.html

If you're now saying that the British press was probably wrong, then Gibbs was apparently correct.

  11. Not Me Adri!

This is a headline from the British press not me. I did not write any of this.

  12. But yes, the photos exist - and a judge ordered them released at one point, although it does not look like the Obama Administration is complying:

  13. Aha... I was thinking the bottom commentary was yours.

It appears the editorial at the bottom of the blog and (possibly) melekai are the only two calling for an apology...

Gibbs is learning fast - blaming the media is ALWAYS easier than addressing issues...

  14. I am aware of the story and have following it. What I wanted to know was the allegations of rape and murder.

Your link touches upon that. Thanks.

  16. If you want really good English newspaper reporting look up any newspaper that is called The 'anything astral that is hanging around space' - be it suns, moons, globes, stars etc.
