JERUSALEM (AP) - Mitt Romney told Jewish donors Monday that their culture is part of what has allowed them to be more economically successful than the Palestinians, outraging Palestinian leaders who suggested his comments were racist and out of touch with the realities of the Middle East. His campaign later said his remarks were mischaracterized.

"As you come here and you see the GDP per capita, for instance, in Israel which is about $21,000 dollars, and compare that with the GDP per capita just across the areas managed by the Palestinian Authority, which is more like $10,000 per capita, you notice such a dramatically stark difference in economic vitality," the Republican presidential candidate told about 40 wealthy donors who ate breakfast at the luxurious King David Hotel.

Romney said some economic histories have theorized that "culture makes all the difference."

"And as I come here and I look out over this city and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things," Romney said, citing an innovative business climate, the Jewish history of thriving in difficult circumstances and the "hand of providence." He said similar disparity exists between neighboring countries, like Mexico and the United States.

Palestinian reaction to Romney was swift and pointed.

"It is a racist statement and this man doesn't realize that the Palestinian economy cannot reach its potential because there is an Israeli occupation," said Saeb Erekat, a senior aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

"It seems to me this man lacks information, knowledge, vision and understanding of this region and its people," Erekat added. "He also lacks knowledge about the Israelis themselves. I have not heard any Israeli official speak about cultural superiority."

As criticism mounted while Romney traveled to Poland, campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said: "His comments were grossly mischaracterized." The Republican's campaign contends Romney's comparison of countries that are close to each other and have wide income disparities - the U.S. and Mexico, Chile and Ecuador - shows his comments were broader than just the comparison between Israel and Palestine.

While speaking to U.S. audiences, Romney often highlights culture as a key to economic success and emphasizes the power of the American entrepreneurial spirit compared to the values of other countries. But his decision to highlight cultural differences in a region where such differences have helped fuel violence for generations raises new questions about the former businessman's diplomacy skills.

As he has at home, Romney in Jerusalem cited a book titled, "Guns, Germs and Steel," that suggests the physical characteristics of the land account for the differences in the success of the people that live there.

"And you look at Israel and you say you have a hard time suggesting that all of the natural resources on the land could account for all the accomplishment of the people here," Romney said, before citing another book, "The Wealth and Poverty of Nations," by former Harvard professor David Landes.

This book, Romney said in Jerusalem, concludes that "if you could learn anything from the economic history of the world it's this: Culture makes all the difference. Culture makes all the difference."

The economic disparity between the Israelis and the Palestinians is actually much greater than Romney stated. Israel had a per capita gross domestic product of about $31,000 in 2011, while the West Bank and Gaza had a per capita GDP of just over $1,500, according to the World Bank.

Romney, seated next to billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson at the head of the table, told donors that he had read books and relied on his own business experience to understand why the difference is so great.

His comparison of the two economies did not take into account the stifling effect the Israeli occupation has had on the Palestinian economy in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem - areas Israel captured in 1967 where the Palestinians hope to establish a state.

In the West Bank, Palestinians have only limited self-rule. Israel controls all border crossings in and out of the territory, and continues to restrict Palestinian trade and movement. Israel annexed east Jerusalem in 1967, but has invested much less heavily there than in Jewish west Jerusalem.

And although Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip in 2005, it continues to control access and has enforced a crippling border blockade since the Islamic militant Hamas seized the territory in 2007.

It's true that Israel has logged tremendous achievements, said Abraham Diskin, a political science professor at the Inter-Disciplinary Center outside of Tel Aviv. But "you can understand this remark in several ways," he added. "You can say it's anti-Semitic. 'Jews and money.'"

The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund repeatedly have said that the Palestinian economy can only grow if Israel lifts those restrictions.

"It's Israeli occupiers and Palestinians under occupation, and that's why Palestinians cannot realize their potential," Erekat said.

The breakfast with top donors - including Adelson, New York Jets owner Woody Johnson and hedge fund manager Paul Singer - concluded Romney's visit to Israel, the second leg of a three-nation overseas tour designed to bolster his foreign policy credentials.

Standing on Israeli soil for the first time as the GOP's presumptive presidential nominee, Romney on Sunday declared Jerusalem to be the capital of Israel and said the U.S. has promised never to "look away from our passion and commitment to Israel."

The status of Jerusalem is a critical issue in peace talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

In Israel, Romney did not meet with Abbas or visit the West Bank. He met briefly with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

Romney's campaign says the trip, which began in England last week, is aimed at improving the former Massachusetts governor's foreign policy experience through a series of meetings with foreign leaders. The candidate has largely avoided direct criticism of U.S. President Barack Obama while on foreign soil.

The Jerusalem fundraiser, however, was a political event that raised more than $1 million for Romney's campaign. It marks at least the second finance event during his tour. The first, in London, attracted about 250 people to a $2,500-per-person fundraiser.

Both presidential candidates have aggressively courted American donors living abroad, a practice that is legal and has been used for decades.

Romney's declaration that Jerusalem is Israel's capital was in keeping with claims made by Israeli governments for decades, even though the United States, like other nations, maintains its embassy in Tel Aviv.

His remarks on the subject during a speech drew a standing ovation from the audience, which included Adelson, the American businessman who has promised to donate more than $100 million to help defeat Obama.

Adelson was among a several donors who flew to Israel for a day of sightseeing with Romney in addition to private meetings with top Israeli officials.

Romney flew to the Middle East from Britain, where he caused a stir by questioning whether officials there were fully prepared for the Olympic Games. A stop in Poland will complete his trip.

Four years ago, Obama visited Israel as a presidential candidate, part of a five-nation trip meant to establish his own foreign policy credentials.

A goal of Romney's overseas trip is to demonstrate his confidence on the world stage, but the stop in Israel also was designed to appeal to evangelical voters at home and cut into Obama's support among Jewish voters and donors. A Gallup survey of Jewish voters released Friday showed Obama with a 68-25 edge over Romney.

Romney and other Republicans have said Obama is insufficiently supportive of Israel.

Republican Mitt Romney and the 'Mormon Plan For America'

http://www.cuttingedge.org/news/n2226.cfm
Why 'no serious Christian could support Mitt Romney', an article by a former Satanist, Mason and Mormon. Religious biased site, looks like, but still... as it says, the matter at hand is not the same as Kennedy's Catholicism. It's about how the Church of Latter Day Saints regards itself in terms of American history and prophecy.

If Mitt Romney became US President this year, would he allow his faith to influence government policy? I think he might.

Separation of Church and State, for god's sake....! Faith has no business interfering in politics. Not in a modern democracy anyway. Mormonism is a dangerous cult and the US government should shut them down like they did to Koresh. Plenty of taxable assets and property to seize... so, why not? I hope they take out Scientology too while they're at it. Why are these cults even allowed to exist in a country as advanced as the USA? Religions pay no tax, if you didn't know. That's what it's all about ... money, as always.

Was George HW Bush the illegitimate son of a Nazi?

http://aangirfan.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/nazi-skorzeny-and-bush.html
Since the OSS (CIA), NASA and Federal Reserve, not to mention the Vatican, all have ties to the Third Reich, this - unverified, as it states at the link - should come as no surprise.

GHWB (nee Scherf), was director of the CIA, let's recall. I've thought for a long time that if anyone knows who killed JFK, he does.

This is not just a cheap shot at any Neo-Cons present, or at the USA in general... we all know about Bush and Hitler, but it's an area well worth greater scrutiny I think, and bringing to more people's attention.

I'm coming to believe that the present day United States is just a continuation of the Third Reich... or at least its' military arm. What happens when that military machine - the world's largest by far - decides it wants to invade China, or Europe? You'll argue that there is no money, or that a few Taliban with AK's kicked their asses, or that policy is dictated by AIPAC... but seriously, what will it look like when the USA takes off that mask and stops pretending it is not a totalitarian state?

I fear for the future.

The Truth About the Last 70 Years

http://www.nexus-magazin.de/artikel/lesen/nexus-interview-mit-douglas-dietrich-die-wahrheit-ueber-die-letzten-70-jahre
Last issue of this magazine I picked up, they had something on Al-CIAda by Canadian author Andrew G Marshall, formerly of Global Research, who I've spoken with quite a bit online. In general, it's a publication popular among the 'spiritual' - has stuff on ancient stones, crop circles, alternative medicine and so on, but their mission statement on the inside cover simply says :

"NEXUS recognises humanity is undergoing a massive transformation. With this in mind NEXUS seeks to provide 'hard to get' information..."

Works for me. The political content is brilliant.

And this link, to a German interview with a former US military librarian responsible for the destruction of top secret documents at the Presidio base in SF, California, is about the best thing I've read this year.

Really, click through and read this in full. It's mind-blowing stuff...

Did you know FD Roosevelt had a plan for war with the UK, and wanted to invade Canada? The British monarchy basically gave the Chinese Opium business to the US to prevent this, and it is the reason half-American Churchill was put in power. (from memory, I believe FDR was Skull & Bones, maybe wrong... the name Delano certainly features there somewhere. The founding of that Yale group has a lot to do with opium... is worth a google) - I can't remember the guy's name right now, the founder. He was an opium trader, I believe.

Have you heard of the British and American chemical weapons ships destroyed by the Luftwaffe at Bari, southern Italy, killing hundreds of thousands in a cloud of nerve gas, which greatly improved Mussolini's standing in the north?

Did you know the Nazis had the atomic bomb before the US did, and used it in Latvia, 1944?

Did you know there is an 'autonomous oblast' in eastern Russia, home to thousands of Jews, in effect an 'Asian Israel'?

So, my highest recommendation. If any of this can be debunked, please do. As it stands, I find it all quite believable, given what we know today about plans for unending war and probably WW3 sooner or later...

Just as WW2 was in many ways just a continuation of the first, I can't help wondering if the wheels have always been turning for a third, all entirely stage-managed by [the usual suspects].

I love that the opening ceremonies it paying tribute to London's NHS.

Yes... that bastion of "vile Socialism", where people don't have to worry about dying or going bankrupt because they or someone in their family gets sick.

And yeah... i know there are problems... the funding is an issue...
But at least they've made a point of acknowledging that health care is a right and not a privilege for those with money.

Damned Socialists!

We could learn a lot from them.

A Look Back at the Houla Massacre in Syria

http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/a-look-back-at-the-houla-massacre-in-syria-a-845854.html#ref=rss?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
Initially, the United Nations was convinced that the Syrian government was behind the brutal Houla massacre. But then, some began to have doubts. SPIEGEL traveled to the town to interview survivors and witnesses -- and was able to reconstruct the horrifying slaughter.

http://cdn1.spiegel.de/images/image-360400-galleryV9-owet.jpg

Nothing is going to happen, Muawiya Sayyid, a retired police officer, reassured his family on the afternoon of May 25. They were afraid to leave the house, but Sayyid reminded his family that he had been a colonel and troops with regime connections had remained unharmed in previous raids.

It was a fatal miscalculation, as Colonel Sayyid was forced to realize during the last few minutes of his life. According to statements by his surviving wife and daughter, he was in his room on the second floor when he overheard the murderers in front of the house as they agreed bring out the women first and then kill everyone. He told his wife and children to run. "I'll try to stall them," he said. He succeeded, but paid for it with his life.

The Houla massacre at the end of May, which claimed the lives of 108 village residents, according to the United Nations, including 49 children and 34 women, most of them murdered with hatchets, knives and guns, shocked the world. UN observers were able to gain access to the site of the carnage, where they could see the bodies and independently confirm what had happened there. The Syrian ambassadors to the UN and 12 countries, including Germany, were expelled. On June 1, the UN Human Rights Council condemned the Syrian regime and its shabiha militias for the massacre, with Russia and China voting against the resolution. The government in Damascus, however, blamed the incident on "terrorists" and denounced what it called a "tsunami of lies" over the massacre.

But then views began to shift. As time passed, the UN began to question its original findings. On June 27, the Human Rights Council discussed a report prepared by its Syria commission, which concluded that there was insufficient evidence to determine who had committed the massacre.........

France's proposed tax hikes spark 'exodus' of wealthy - Telegraph

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/france/9404209/Frances-proposed-tax-hikes-spark-exodus-of-wealthy.html
Looming tax hikes by France's new socialist government have triggered an exodus of the Gallic super-rich to 'wealth-friendly' nations like Britain and Switzerland.

Prime minister David Cameron angered the French last month when he said he would "roll out the red carpet" to wealthy French citizens and firms who wanted move out and pay their taxes in Britain.

He told the B20 business summit in Mexico in June: "I think it's wrong to have a completely uncompetitive top rate of tax.

"If the French go ahead with a 75 per cent top rate of tax we will roll out the red carpet and welcome more French businesses to Britain and they can pay tax in Britain and pay for our health service and schools and everything else."

BBC News - Acta: Controversial anti-piracy agreement rejected by EU

http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-18704192

The proposed agreement sought to curb piracy, but internet campaigners said it posed a threat to online freedoms.

The rejection vote followed a failed attempt to postpone the decision because of ongoing investigations into Acta by the European Court of Justice.

Euro MP David Martin said: "It's time to give [Acta] its last rites."

Twenty two EU member states, including the UK, had signed the Acta treaty - but it had not been formally ratified.

Outside the EU, the treaty also had the support of the US, Australia, Canada, Japan, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore and South Korea.

However, following significant protests, several countries chose not to back the treaty.

Wednesday's vote is seen by most observers as the final blow to the treaty in its current form. It means no member states will be able to join the agreement.

A total of 478 MEPs voted against the deal, with 39 in favour. There were 165 abstentions.
'Hello democracy'

EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht said work into tackling piracy would continue.

"Today's rejection does not change the fact that the European Commission has committed itself to seeking answers to the questions raised by the European public," he said.
